Welcome to Mark

Salsa would like to welcome Mark Calvert as our new Senior Developer.

Salsa Digital 26 June 2019

Welcome Mark

Salsarian since 4 March 2019

Salsa is thrilled to welcome Mark Calvert to the Salsa Digital team. Mark is a ‘full stack’ developer, which means he’s experienced in both frontend development (using code to translate visual designs into actual webpage layouts) and backend development (using various languages and programs across database and infrastructure).

Mark has a broad knowledge of lots of different computer languages and is keen to learn more, especially in the open source space. “Salsa is using the latest open source technologies, lots of cool technologies, which I’m really enjoying learning.”

About Mark

Mark has a Bachelor of Science in Applied Computing from Waikato University in New Zealand. He’s also an Apple Certified Support Technician.

Mark’s first job after uni was working in the .NET space in the food industry, firstly as a junior developer and then working his way up to senior developer. From there, Mark worked for Macinhome as a mobile IT consultant, before moving to Integration Technology Partners. Mark was a development manager/senior analyst programmer for this Brisbane-based software startup for four and a half years. During this time he developed a software product suite that integrated with abattoirs’ hardware for grading/labelling stations, sales/purchase orders on mobile devices, inventory, tracking, reporting systems, etc.

Mark then spent just over two years working for the University of Queensland as a senior developer. While there he worked on a service portfolio management system that collated the University’s IT services throughout the organisation (for monitoring, reporting, disaster recovery, risk assessment, financial management, etc.) so the University could budget and report on how much each service area was costing/would cost.

Mark’s last role before moving to Salsa earlier this year was with ASB Bank in New Zealand. He worked there for two and a half years as a senior software developer focused on API integration. His projects included upgrading the bank’s legacy monolithic web services to a new microservices API architecture, and developing Australasia’s first fully digital onboarding process using biometric technology of a selfie pic to verify a new customer’s identity via an app, rather than them having to physically go into a branch.

Why Salsa?

Mark was referred to Salsa by our IT guru, Stuart Rowlands, and was attracted to Salsa’s open source ethos. “I wanted to be in front of the curve, wanted to work for a company that used the latest technology and encouraged its people to learn new things. Salsa uses the latest open source technologies and is an industry leader in this area.”

Mark was also attracted to Salsa’s remote working culture. Mark originally hails from country New Zealand (he grew up on a farm) but now lives in Auckland...sort of.As a self-described ‘digital nomad’ he’s often working abroad. He’s currently living in Mexico with his girlfriend and in the past he’s worked in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Hawaii and Bali.
