Why you might need a theme review

There are many reasons you might need a theme review, such as:

• Non-responsive design: Your current design/theme might only function on a desktop size screen, which means your website doesn’t display or work properly for smaller screens like tablets and/or smartphones.

• Browser compatibility: Your current website might not display correctly across the full range of browsers, such as Chrome, Safari, and/or MS Edge.

• Non-inclusive design: Your current design/theme might not have been optimised with accessibility in mind or might not have changed enough to not meet the WCAG guidelines and government requirements for accessibility.

• Difficult to extend: Your current theme may make it difficult to add new designs, styling, or functionality as it might be based on outdated design frameworks or coding practices.

Overview

A theme review includes technical assessment, code review, issue identification, and WCAG 2.0 compliance for distinct page templates. Salsa’s theme review for each distinct page template covers:

• Stylesheet audit focusing on: complexity; reusability; browser compatibility; breakpoints and their use in responsive design; and media asset use and optimisation.

• Client-side script audit focusing on: complexity; performance; coding standards; and browser compatibility.

• Template file audit focusing on: complexity; performance; coding standards and best practices; and semantic use of HTML elements.

• Template functions audit focusing on: complexity; performance; and coding standards.

• Accessibility audit focusing on WCAG 2.0 AA compliance.

Engagement process

Our engagement process is outlined below:

1. Review questionnaire or brief: Agency to complete a light questionnaire (or send Salsa a high level project brief) reflecting basic requirements and/or project key business drivers.

2. Intake and alignment: Salsa conducts a free 30-45 minute intake phone call to align on scope, expectations and overall engagement requirements based on the questionnaire or brief.

3. Project setup

4. Familiarisation and user experience testing

5. Environment setup and assessment tooling

6. Conduct theme review

7. Produce theme review checklist report covering issues, criticality, recommendations and optional cost estimates for remediation

8. Report handover and optional stakeholder presentation

Outputs

As part of the theme review, you’ll receive:

1. Checklist report including criticality indicator for critical, high priority, medium priority and low priority findings

2. Issue identification and/or potential areas of attention

3. Recommendations and/or suggested remediations

4. High level costings on implementing suggested recommendations/remediations (optional)

The simple theme review will deliver:

• Performance: Ensuring the theme is built to perform efficiently and thus improve accessibility and overall user experience in remote and/regional areas.

Fixed price packages

All packages include technical assessment, code review, issue identification, and WCAG 2.0 AA compliance for up to three, six or 10 distinct page templates.
